Accessibility, audits & advice

Making sure the built environment is for everyone

At abc, we have dedicated accessibility advisors who ensure homes, public spaces, and communities are easily accessible for all. We remove barriers through user engagement, accessibility audits, design appraisals and access strategies, we also work within niche areas – like dementia-friendly design.

Our approach to accessibility is based on our research projects for building users, grounded in BS 8300 Parts 1 and 2, Housing for Varying Needs guidance, PAS 2014, and the Equality Act 2010.

Here are the specific services we provide.

User engagement and co-production

We collaborate with users to truly understand lived experience. We do this through access panels, user groups, workshops, walkthroughs and co-design sessions – ensuring practical insight informs brief setting, options appraisal and design development.

Accessibility audits and assessments

To identify physical, sensory and cognitive barriers, we undertake detailed audits of buildings and external environments – concluding with a report that gives clear recommendations and advice. Our assessments address the needs of people with mobility, sensory or cognitive impairments, as well as neurodiverse people and those with dementia.

Access appraisals

To guarantee built environments that are inclusive, compliant and future-proof, we offer independent access appraisals. Within this service, we review drawings and specifications and advise on layout, circulation, level changes, wayfinding, lighting, and environmental comfort.

Dementia-friendly design and research-led practice

With our unique research and knowledge gained from partnering with Scottish universities and the Government, we focus specifically on improving and easing the lives of those living with dementia.
